Who me? Weird?

Filed under: Just Life — blestwithsons @ 8:12 pm

I like memes. I do. And when I’m tagged, I almost always comply with great willingness and abandon. But when Jana tagged me to do the Six Weird Things thing… I balked. For one thing, my mind went blank. For another, I have no secrets (which may be a little weird in itself) and already told you almost everything suitable for the public about me that I could think of in my 100 Things. But then Phil of Brandywine Books (I LOVE that blog) tagged me too… and a double tag, oh, that’s like a Double Dog Dare and now I have to do it! I just have too! So I polled my parents, my husband, and my best friend, just for starters, and I think I’ve come up with some decent weirdness.

So now, I present to you,

ONLY six Weird Things About Blest

1. I don’t like towels. Or rather, I have nothing against the towels themselves - some of them are quite lovely and soft actually - but I do not like drying off. I would much rather drip dry -but this annoys my husband since it leaves soggy places where’er I may roam. I don’t even like to dry my hands. I would rather shake them off and eventually rub them on my jeans. I think it’s a sensitivity issue… I don’t like friction on my skin.

2. I don’t know how weird this is, but my best buddy wanted me to mention it. I have a FREAKISHLY good memory which features strange connections. I will remember all sorts of random details and embarassing facts about you looong after we have met - so be careful what you tell me. I’m not saying I never make mistakes, of course. But still, I remember lots. And unfortunately, without even trying, I remember ridiculous amounts of entertainment trivia. I can tell you more than you ever wanted to know about movies that I’ve never even seen.

Illustrative Anecdote: I worked in a small video store in my youth. Many years later I was playing Trivial Pursuit and the question was about a mock rock documentary. I closed my eyes and went “Wait a minute… Third shelf section, halfway down…” While I was saying that I was moving my hand like I was picking up a video box. “Oh! Spinal Tap! The answer is Spinal Tap!” I’ve never seen the movie - but I remembered the box and where it was located in that store. That is what my memory is like.

3. I find it incredibly soothing to stand on my left foot and bend forward - extending my right leg out behind me and my arms out in front. I can balance like that for some time. If I’m feeling frivolous, I will say “Look! I’m Michelle Kwan!!” (because it’s a pose somewhat similar to one of her better known moves)

4. I’m very contradictory. For example, I am well known for my lack of organization…yet I can be VERY organized in certain areas. Like craft supplies, or bookshelves, or collections. And I get quite peeved if things aren’t put back where they should be…except when I don’t care where they should be. It can be hard to tell when I care and when I don’t. I’m very selfish, yet very giving. I’m extremely driven, except when I’m busy being super-lazy. I’m like the North Carolina weather in the summer- wait five minutes and I’ll change.

5. I talk in “voices” At any given moment, sometimes halfway through a sentence, I break out in accents. British, Southern, Irish, Scottish… And when I’m conducting Children’s Choir- German and/or Russian. (you should see the kids’ eyes!) I also do voices that are somewhat cartoony. Marvin Martian, for example. And I can drop my speaking voice into an almost bass register that even frightens me! I don’t always mean to break into accent - I’ve been doing it so long it’s rather automatic. I would love to do voice-over work someday.

6. I’m very, very friendly. Too friendly. I’ll talk to strangers at the drop of a hat. I don’t think that’s weird but my friend Sarah does. And she has good reason. She and I became friends because she was delivering a scrapbook album to my house and I took her and her kids hostage. (I was lonely!) I fed them a good lunch though and we’ve been pals ever since! However, it doesn’t usually work that way. I’m so friendly (think big golden retriever puppy) that I scare people. So I must engage in a large degree of self-talk to approximate normal human interaction. Don’t tell them everything you’ve noticed about them already, Mr Monk. That is not normal….No - don’t call tomorrow. Wait a few days. Let them see that you’re harmless and not clingy at all. Oh wait - am I being too aloof?! I’m not sure - maybe you do that too…but I think it’s probably weird.

I lied about the Only Six thing… Here’s bonus weirdness…

I had just finished polling my parents and my husband (who were all near my kitchen) about my potential weirdness. I then called my mom over to see some cool beads on a blog that I frequent. We oohed and aahed over them all, but then one set really jumped out at me. “That’s the set I would want!” I said. “You know how I pick my beads? A really good bead, a bead I want to buy, is one that I want to eat! If I look at them and want to lick ‘em - those are good beads.” Without missing a beat - my parents and husband all said “Now that’s weird.” So there ya go…

I tag the entirety of the OWOA site! So there!
