Blest with sons

A little off the top…

Filed under: Crafting, Just Life — blestwithsons @ 6:13 am

Well… I finally got my badly needed haircut. (and no, my hairdresser wasn’t at the dinner with the Queen. She was at a different swanky dinner in DC) And I do feel (and look) ever so much better! I’ve always said that you should

Never underestimate the power of a woman’s haircut.

Ladies? Can I get a witness?

But seriously, I knew haircuts were potent in their confidence altering might…but I didn’t know how much this last haircut would do!

[Cue Exciting News in the world of Blest!]

When I went in for my haircut, I did something I have been doing for each haircut for, oh say, a year now. I wore some of my handmade jewelry. Actually, I try to always wear my jewelry. A) I like it! B) I have scads of it, so it would be silly not to wear it, C) it is good advertising. You never know when someone might say “Where did you get that?!” And I’ll sell people the necklace off my neck if they want. I love my jewelry…but I’m pretty fond of $$ too. But I put special effort in choosing the pieces I wear to my hair salon.

You see, this is a pretty swanky salon. They do it all - makeup, manicures, massages, the whole deal. They moved into a new location not long ago, and the owner is steadily transforming the waiting area into a kitschy boutique. There are several displays of jewelry, some handmade, some not… Well, I wanted to be one of those displays! (no, not me personally - though I am generally a spectacle where’er I go) Months ago I let the owner know in “casual” conversation that I was a jewelry crafter. This week was the moment! I wore this funky collar of copper wire and rose quartz (picture of that will come in my next post) and loitered hopefully by the jewelry cases as I waited for my stylist. The owner came over and we began to discuss the stuff in the cases. “Did you make what you’re wearing?” she asked. When I said yes, she said, “That’s really cool! So I said, “Well…if you ever have room on your shelves….” Her reply? “Well. Now that you mention it….”

SHRIEK!!

I offered to bring my stuff on Saturday and she pointed out to me that if I got it there on Friday I would have greater odds of Mother’s Day purchases. I love this woman!! So yesterday morning I got up after a night of NO sleep (too excited) and got my work together. Matching earrings had to be knocked out in a hurry, pricing had to be determined… My pieces are going in on consignment, which I like because they’re all still mine until they sell. The owner takes a little off the top, which is extremely fitting for a beauty salon! (wakka wakka)

So… now I am the proud occupant of three primo shelves!! And I do mean primo. The shelves she’s giving me are at eye-level, and right by the coffee maker!! (how apropos! ) They are almost the first thing you see when you walk in the door!! And if I say so myself, which I don’t have to cause the owner said it too, my stuff is different. The other items in the shop are plain silver, and some dainty items of silver and Swarovski crystal. My work is definitely going to stand out! Now I just hope it SELLS out!!!

Here’s everything I took to the salon, all boxed up and ready. Next time I go over I’ll get a pic of the actual display…

  3. As a faithful customer, I can say that I’m happy you’re making the big time. I hope you remember all of your supporters when you’re living in a high rise in New York; going to dinners with the Queen; playing Tennis with Tom Cruise; ordering caviar by the pound.

    :-p

  4. Tom Cruise? Ewwww! I wasn’t a fan even before he went all wonky. Now the Queen? I think she’s pretty cool. I’d rather have dinner with Rockapella though.

  9. I get so many compliments when I wear your pieces! I’m not a huge bracelet fan (it’s hard when I’m on the computer all day at work), but those are beau-ti-ful!

  11. How exciting. And the pieces really are incredible and different! I ’specially like the pink-n-green interlocking circle bracelet with the silver swirly beads. I may be back to shop later :)

  13. That is very exciting news! And I love your stuff. You’ll sell lots of jewelry that way.

My friend sold my stuff on consignment and it worked very well for both of us, by the way. When she closed her shop, I got back a nice chunk of inventory that I used to start my online sales.

  14. I read on a jewelry forum that the chemicals in a salon turn the silver jewelry black. Have you had this experience?

  15. Nope. I’ve had a few sterling pieces tarnish - but that could’ve happened anyway. I just brought ‘em home to clean them.
